Storytlr Installation

Storytlr is an open source lifestreaming and micro blogging platform. You can use it for a single user or it can act as a host for many people all from the same installation.

You can see review from Ars, installation procedure at project home wiki.

But, if you don’t have ssh access to your host like me, you can install Storytlr using this alternative way:

  • Download the package
  • Upload it to your host, unzip (via file manager)
  • Create database and username-password. This is important: If you use strong password, you might get blank page after installation
  • Import /protected/install/database.sql to database you’ve created before
  • Go to the /protected/install/config/ folder, and make a copy of the provided config sample file to config.ini, edit it, i.e. database name, username, password, host name
  • Now you can browse the site, login: admin and password: storytlr, if you still get blank page try to change permission 777 to folder temp/, upload/, logs/ and feeds/

You can see mine here: storytlr.margjakob.net

DynDNS, Linksys, MAMP

For what? Host your own website, blog, email server, security systems etc.

DynDNS will provide Dynamic DNS Free (DDNS) that allows you to create a hostname that points to your home or office IP address, providing an easy-to-remember URL for quick access. Setup guide available from Saif Khan.

Linksys modem/router need to be set up, so the domain can be routed to your server. Pain in the Tech shows you how.

MAMP stands for Macintosh, Apache, MySQL and PHP, local server environment for Mac OS X. Stooryduster shows you how to setup wordpress in local server.

In MAMP Pro this local server can be accessed from the internet, with the service provided by DynDNS. Here’s screenshot for setting in my case, server and hosts setting.

And voilà, http://margjakob.ath.cx:8888 is ready for the world. (my movies and tv log)

My system: MacBook white 2.2 GHz, Snow Leopard 10.6.2, Wordpress 2.9.1

How To Make Unicode Domain

Yes. Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew, and other characters are coming to Internet domain extensions thanks to a vote by ICANN. Previously, ICANN allowed the registration of domain names with non-Latin characters—so, for example, http://clintecker他的新自行车骨骼山羊.com—but the extension had to remain in Latin characters. Now, instead of being limited to the Latin alphabet, domain extensions will utilize some 100,000 new characters. http://clinteckergoatbonedbyhisnewbicycle.كوم could become a reality sometime in 2010. (Ars)

But Gruber’s url shortener ✪df.ws already made me curious long time ago. Here’s what I do at the time to make something like that:

  • Go to who.godaddy.com
  • Enter my Unicode character for example ♫♪.com
  • And I find this: Domain Name: XN–L6HB.COM
  • Now I make that as my subdomain: XN–L6HB.margjakob.net = ♫♪.margjakob.net

But then again, I found out that’s Punycode. iWantMyName have the converter. For now, I found it nice only for url shortener. I can’t type the character directly in address bar, not even with Snow Leopard symbol and text substitution.

Flash 10.1 and MySpace

Didn’t work well (I try Safari and Chrome). Yeah… it still beta. But I really need flash that didn’t eat my cpu and need that MySpace music player too. I check out at least 5 band a day before I get 1 or 2 of them. So just click anywhere till the music plays!

[update 201109] If you can’t bear them, here’s how to revert to stable version.

So I Use Google Wave to Play Sudoko… Alone

This afternoon I use Google Wave for the first time. It’s neat. ‘Waving’ with kcim from warez-bb for awhile. Then we don’t know what else to do there, so I started playing sudoku alone. My total score now is 61. I already sent invitation to my friend. Looks like no one get it yet (Google still licking the stamp :D).

So, is Google Wave worse than email? Worse than twitter? I think it’s a nice digital office. Cool playback feature. But not everyday use social media.

[update 161009] It’s supposed to be something like this:

Pulp Wave Fiction (you must watch Pulp Fiction so you understand). Nice!

One more important thing: with:public

Google Wave, Anyone?

So, I just got access to Google Wave, and I got 8 invitation left. Whom I should talk to? Who want that? When I watched Google Wave Developer Preview at Google I/O 2009 I think it’s really cool, but now I don’t know what to do with it. My ID: marg.jakob [at] googlewave.com

Everyone who doesn’t have invitation yet, be patient. Google says: “Invitations will not be sent immediately. We have a lot of stamps to lick.”
