Weird Picture – Album Cover…… and Terabithia

Ok. This is a sequel of the previous post. What do you think of those two face? It is look alike, isn’t it? The first face is album cover of Last Choice EP by Love Is All and second face from Why Can’t We Be Friends by War.

The second song, why can’t we be friends is one of the song Ms. Edmunds sing in the class in Bridge to Terabithia (2007), I just finished watch it, good kids movie! It’s nice song by the way. Ms. Edmunds character is played by Zooey Deschanel. Beautiful name. And she got really beautiful blue eyes, same like Emilie De Ravin a.k.a Claire from Lost.

And of course everybody notice May Belle, played by Bailee Madison, she’s really funny and cute, especially when she sulk a.k.a ‘pundung’…. hahaha.

Bad Tagging

I really hate bad tagging like this:

It’s okay if they do it in comments, but in tittle? Come on… I know you shared it, but still… it’s annoying. “How hard is it to not change the file properties?” Last.fm’s user says. Keep Stats Clean!

I’m Sorry Man! I Used Your Address

This story began when I got update on  iTunes Facebook page like this:

Congratulations! Enjoy your FREE 10 song Spring into Summer Music Mix from iTunes, featuring The Decemberists, Bat for Lashes and 2 exclusive songs from Dave Matthews Band…blabla…Please note this free music mix is only available on the US iTunes Store.

Then, I go to the store, but then as usual I didn’t want to pay or create something with money involved (and I’m not in the US), I follow the step-by-step, pick ‘none’ as payment, and then I have to fill out the required name and address fields. So, I go to WhitePages, search my name, and later find some guy with similar name in Florida, and used his address. Another pirate job!

This is kinda lame actually. I already have half of the song, I can get the others elsewhere, the account is not so important, the trick too.

Ow, by the way, here’s the song list. Happy listening!

Percussion Gun / White Rabbits
Go On, Say It / Blind Pilot
The Rake’s Song / The Decemberists
Wantin’ Her Again / Ben Kweller
Cornbread (Alpine Valley 2008) [Live] / Matthews Band
Dancing Nancies (Alpine Valley 2008) [Live] / Dave Matthews Band
Daniel / Bat for Lashes
Airstream Driver / Gomez
Black Tables / Other Lives
Taller Children / Elizabeth & The Catapult

Bark Cat Bark & Depapepe

I just got my ‘Free MP3s Recommended by Last.fm’, four of them are music from Bark Cat Bark. First song is Anaehoomalu Bay, the genre is Hawaiian, playing ukulele I think, the same as two other songs, Waipahoehoe and Hawaiantalya. It’s kinda different with his last album I got, Iceland. In that album he playing piano, classical – ambient I think.

But the interesting one is the last song, Hanapepe Heights. The music is really similar with Depapepe, the acoustic guitar musical duo of Takuya Miura and Yoshinari Takuoka. This duo really have amazing guitar skill, one of my fav, you should try them. Happy listening!

Robotic Indonesian Gamelan

gamelan is a musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Bali or Java, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included.

This is kinda different. This gamelan played by robotics specifically crafted for gamelan.

They will be in Handmade Music in Brooklyn, Plus Online Stream, today.

Fatamorgana (Indonesian for Mirage), a composition by Aaron Taylor Kuffner (Zemi17) played by the worlds first and only pair of Robotic Balinese Gender Wayang (10 key bronze xylophones with resonators) from the world’s first and only fully robotic Indonesian styled gamelan orchestra, The GamelaTron. GamelaTron is a collaboration between The League of Electronic Musical Urban Robots (LEMUR) and the composer Zemi17.

Aaron Taylor Kuffner have formal education in Institut Seni Indonesia in Yogyakarta Karawitan Department (2004 – 2005) and he was Cultural Diplomat / Ethnomusicologist at Indonesian Foriegn Minestry.

LEMUR is a Brooklyn-based group of artists and technologists who create robotic musical instruments. Founded in 2000 by musician and engineer Eric Singer, LEMUR creates exotic, sculptural musical instruments which integrate robotic technology. LEMUR’s philosophy is to build robots that are new types of musical instruments, as opposed to animatronic robots that play existing instruments.

Is there any Indonesian involved in this project?

This a great project to introduced Indonesia culture, especially our music to the world. This will maintain the continuity of our culture. Indonesian should do this more, so other people can’t claim it’s theirs.

Want To Watch An Opera

Opera is an art form in which singers and musicians perform a dramatic work (called an opera) which combines a text (called a libretto) and a musical score. Opera incorporates many of the elements of spoken theatre, such as acting, scenery and costumes and sometimes includes dance.

Before this day, I thought opera is a boring show, for royal family or rich guy with they strict provision (like in the movie). But then I have new opinion (for boring show, not with rich guy).

It started when I watch Greg Pritchard from Britain’s Got Talent Series 3 Show 5, singing Nessun Dorma (he have high pitch voice, kinda weird (some guy, a host, think it’s really funny), but he get the high note). Then I remember, other guy, a phone salesman named Paul Potts, sang the same song in Series 1. He have a great voice.

Next thing I do is googling for this song, I found that this song kinda popular with Luciano Pavarotti. I started watching his video and the collaboration, The 3 Tenors, and later get their Best Of Album. I listen to it all day, and it’s so beautiful!

Ok. The song and the singer is great. How about the story, the act? I begin to read the story about Nessun Dorma (also my favorite in the best of album). It is an aria (song) from the final act of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot.

It’s a story about cruelty Princess Turandot. Any man who desires to wed Turandot must first answer her three riddles. If he fails, he will be beheaded.

  • Act 1: Prince of Persia has stuck with this rules, Prince of Tartary want to help him, but he is dazzled by Turandot’s beauty instead. Prince of Tartary’s  long-lost father Timur and his slave-girl Liù (who is secretly in love with the Prince), urges him to desist. O giovinetto!
  • Act 2: The Princess presents her riddles. I think it’s kinda hard to answer, but the Prince can answer all 3 riddles
    • What is born each night and dies each dawn? “Hope”
    • What flickers red and warm like a flame, but is not fire? ”Blood”
    • What is like ice, but burns like fire? “Turandot”

Turadot cries out in anger, the Prince propose to her: Bring me my name before sunrise, and at sunrise, I will die. Turandot accepts.

  • Act 3:  Turandot’s command: ”This night, none shall sleep in Peking! The penalty for all will be death if the Prince’s name is not discovered by morning”. This is where Nessun Dorma show up, The Prince waits for dawn and anticipates his victory,
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma! Tu pure, o Principessa, nella tua fredda stanza, guardi le stelle che tremano d’amore, e di speranza!“ (Italian, translation: “None shall sleep! None shall sleep! Even you, O Princess, in your cold bedroom, watch the stars that tremble with love and with hope!”)
Dilegua, o notte! Tramontate, stelle! Tramontate, stelle! All’alba vincerò! Vincerò! Vincerò!” (“Vanish, o night! Set, stars! Set, stars! At daybreak I shall win! I shall win! I shall win!”)
Liù the one who know the name refuse to reveal it (because of love) and stabs herself. Princess is loss. The Prince tries to convince her to love him. And later she declares that she knows the name: ”It is … love!” (hmm.. why this story make me remember about antasari-rani-nasrudin scandal)

So, the story cool too. Why don’t watch opera?

[update 290709] You should watch Shakespeare in Love (1998) to find out some theater in action. Or The Phantom of The Opera (2004), to be more exact. And listen to Emmy Rossum singing there, make me remember to a song by Gita Gutawa, ‘Alunan Sebuah Lagu’.

Great Street Musician

Yesterday I watched the documentary: Playing For Change

These what I got, the story about the great one (not just some street musician):

  • It’s not about money, it’s music, freedom, and the people
  • They do it because they love music, and they never give up for it. Sometime they don’t know what triggered it, just want to try it. They do it not to impress people. ‘Here I am, you don’t have to pay’. It’s a opportunity to show the public that is not the disability that count but the ability
  • May be today people don’t care about them. May be in other day people sticked and hear your music. Out there they got instant feedback as what people think of what they are doing. If people like it they gonna see and drop some money or if they suck people gonna walk on by. But for sure different people, different experience everyday
  • Everybody on the street is their friend, and they feel safe with them gather around. Best time of their day is when they realized that they sing in front of the crowd
  • All of the world coming to them, no matter who they are, no matter what color their hair, no matter what religion they believe in, no matter how much money they got

Fun stuff:

  • Some guy tune his guitar to a pay phone. It’s an F
  • If you can’t defeat others, make a band with them

Music is belong to everybody. It’s a universal language. One day through music there will be peace on the world. It’s not her or his it’s ours.
